We are looking for a way to create a Sales Order and have the items listed not affect the Inventory in any way. The COMMIT options either commit the item or put it on back order. We want to have these sales orders open for furture Service work we are going to perform but don't need the inventory commited or ordered yet.

Maybe a sales order set at the pending approval would accomplish what you are asking. Once your ready to proceed you could then approve the sales order in which it will then enter your normal workflows and inventory.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I was hoping there was another way, as the pending approval sends notices to Managers. Plus we do have some Sales Orders that are put into pending approval for other reasons. Thanks

Could you keep it as a quote then convert to SO when ready?
w
@AI1 Not sure that would work for us. An open Sales Order holds more weight and won't be missed where an Estimate isn't as important for this process. That is for the suggestion.

Under Setup / Accounting / Accounting Preferences on the Order Management tab there are default commit status. NetSuite always defaults to commit available. But you can change this to DO NOT COMMIT. Now you can approve the sales order and no items will be committed. Look up “Committing Orders” in SuiteAnswers for way to auto commit at a later date or in bulk.

@Rebecca The DO NOT COMMIT forces a backordered if the SO is approved. Which means our purchaser is going to order items we don't require yet. Thanks

well that is unfortunate. Seems like Pending Approval is your best bet.
w
Yeah.. that's what I figure. Thanks :)

Could you create a location for those orders that you don’t want to committ inventory against and then approve the sales order? It would still create a back order for that location, but it would be good to see it on reports and filter out that location for those managing the true back orders? There is so much that is missed by leaving it pending approval….
w
Hmmm.. that's a good idea... I'll run that by the team tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks again.

If you only set the location at the header it is easy to update. Please come back with the solution. It is good to see what works in the real world 🙂

That makes sense... I'll let you know how it goes and what we end up doing.
@Rebecca Looks like we are going the route of creating an Estimate and letting it not expire. This will work because we are attaching this to a Task. So it helps up track it.
