Is it possible to display the external ID of an item on the item record itself? Is that a field that can be marked as Show = TRUE?

No but you can create a calculated field and use a formula to show it.

We used to tag external id with a custom item field on item record as well when importing new items, that way its easy to see it at UI level on the item record.
