Found it - but it wasn't what I was looking for - it's a personal preference on global search. Won't impact my field. Guess I'll just create a customer status called "Lead" and make it default.

This is what we do. Although, we have different "Lead" statuses as well as various "prospect" statuses depending on "how they come into the system".
