Is there a way to use a scanner in NS without a third-party app like RF-Smart or NS WMS?

Scanners, when used on barcodes, will inject text into a text field wherever the cursor is currently located.

Correct, it's just a feature of the scanner. Any USB or battery powered bar code reader connected to a PC will print the textual representation of the bar code on the screen when the button to scan is pressed.

RF-SMART tells NetSuite what to do with the information scanned. You can scan into an excel sheet, but without a WMS you have to manually tell NetSuite what you want it to do with those scans, versus it happening automatically with a WMS.
