Also, is there any easy way to run reports that compare one month or one quarter over the same period in the prior FY? When I try to compare Jan-Apr to the same period last FY, it compares to just January. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using the period comparisons in the report columns (i.e. this quarter as a column and same quarter, last FY as another column?) If so, try running the report for the last month of the period in both the beginning and end slot (i.e. March22 for both start and end).
