How can I control the timing with which Netsuite fulfills the line items on a sales order? Let's say a customer orders one item that ships next business day, one item that is on backorder, and one item that is set up as a pre order (will ship at a predetermined later date). All three items will be physically shipped at a different time. How can I get Netsuite to create an item fulfillment record for just one line item at a time, rather than for the entire sales order all at once?

Could you use fulfillment requests as transactions in the middle?

@KevinJ of Kansas I'm not sure I know what functionality you are referring to. Can you provide a little more detail?

I believe the feature you are looking for is advanced shipping.
Advanced Shipping Advanced shipping gives your shipping and accounting departments separate processes for fulfilling and billing orders. Your shipping department fulfills part or all of an order when it is ready to ship. Then, your accounting department creates an invoice or cash sale for the shipped items and rendered services. With Advanced Shipping, you can track partial shipments and invoice customers for partial or entire orders. Your picking tickets reflect the items on the order that are actually shipped.

No - there is a specific transaction type called Fulfillment Requests - the concept is you have an SO that you present to your customer from 1 spot, and fulfill using separate transactions from separate warehouses.

Yes fulfilment requests will be useful here Definitely need to look into it Fulfilment requests can get created automatically using the ALA feature in Netsuite
