We came across a situation where we need to use the same Item Number for an Inventory and Assembly Item, since some times we need to buy it from suppliers and sometimes we build it. • Have any of you done anything like that? I was wondering what other people are doing.

Make it an assembly. You can still buy assemblies so then the one number can be purchased or built

Is there any special setup or flag to be able to be able to buy Assembly Items?

Yes there's a setting in accounting settings that says allow purchase of assembly items
