Hi everyone, I have a question for rev reg gurus: Company that sells software and software subscriptions. In the same sales order, we have lines for which revenue recognition should be immediate and for one line, revenue should be recognized per month based on the start and end date of the subscription. The problem regarding that particular line is that our customers activate this software subscription line few months after the sale and we do not know exactly when in advance. Is there an option that allows me to put the line on hold until it is activated? Thanks in advance.

There are a few ways to achieve variable rev rec each with pros and cons. You can put rev rec on hold and then cancel the hold, you can stick with ratable and put future dates then update the dates when known, you can leverage fulfillment to indicate the date when the date is known, you can also use rev rec events.

Hello Aries, Thanks so much for your reply. If I put the item on hold it will apply on all transactions is it manageable by transaction? I like the idea of future dates ! I am not sure if I did understand the fulfilment part but I guess it won't work as the revenue arrangement are created based on the sales orders.. What do you mean by using rev rec events ? Thank you so muchhhh !!!

@Leya sweet you can leave the start date blank. So it will create a rev arrangement but not recognize it. It still becomes available for allocation though. Whenever the service activates you can populate the start date and it will start to recognize.

Hey Shamwow, thanks for your reply!!Actually the rev arrangement and the plan get created even if start date& end date are left empty. The system use the trandate for start/end date on the plan level when left empty. :/

ohh thats prolly due to the mapping. yeah in my scenario the blank date applied to all the items so i could just remove the revenue field mapping and that worked. If you actually map that field to a custom date on the S.O line then you can populate the dates for all the lines except the one you do not want. Then it should stay blank. a screenshot of your rev field mapping would help @Leya sweet

Actually the revenue elements don't have any start/end date when not entered at the transaction level. However when I generate the plan it comes up with a start date/end date = trandate

whats this for you ?
cuz in my case when the date is not there, it does not even create a plan.

You aightt! , wrong rule setup. For me it was event date and I changed it to rev element start date and yes the plan doesn't get created anymore. Thanks a lot ! I will leave them empty until the line get activated then update the start/end dates on transac line and revenue element. Thanks again sham

happy to help!

Yep this works too, having them blank will just give you an error, which in your case, expected error. I am too OCD to have it this way, because I like errors to be legitimate errors.

Hi Aries, So what would be the best solution for y'a ?
