Is anyone using demand planning to spin off work orders and purchase orders for assembly items? Anyone have issues with this? When manually creating demand plans to generate a supply plan it will give me a PO / WO for the top level item but not for component items, raw materials.

you will need to setup the components with Supply Type and Demand Source. E.g. Supply Type = Purchase, Demand Source = 'Entered and Planned'

You may also want to look into the source on the Assembly items constituent bom items so that the sub assemblies are "chained" properly

Hey Ryan, thanks for the comment however I was a bit confused. Do you mean go to the individual item records for the component items and set the Supply Type and Demand Source there, or did I misread this?
