Either way - Instead of burning a ton of time - I'd script an after submit on my PO to update fields on the item record for this purpose

Would still need to to initialize first I would think.

I don't write the scripts - but I'd probably be lazy and say "hey - grab all the items on my order - if this field on them is blank - then get the details from that line on this order and update that item"
