While doing or initial on-boarding several years ago. We setup outsourced manufacturing for a part, and now we need to setup another part for the same facility with another vendor. We were advised that we select the location of the manufacturing facility on the vendor record. When trying to assign the same location under the vendor -> outsourced manufacturing subtab it says [location] (Already assigned [another vendor]). Do we need to setup a location for each vendor that does outside services? Given we do standard costing that is going to be a pain to manage.
Based on everything I'm reading. We do indeed need to setup one location per vendor when doing outsourced manufacturing. How do you guys manage your standard costs? Do you create one standard per-vendor since you cannot edit the location list after records are attached to the standard? Alternatively do you deprecate your old standard, and create a new standard with the outsourced location included?
Looks like management does not want to maintain a standard on the raw material/wip per contract manufacturing location due to the increased burden put on the accounting team if avoidable. Would using a standard inventory item on the bill of material be advisable with the understanding that the WO/PO are built/received in unison? (maybe scripted later down the line). That way costs are captured and we're not maintaining a standard for each contract manufacturing location.

for your question for the location of outsource vendor, Yes it needs to be unique for vendor, so under normal circumstances if it's different vendor then it's a different physical location, if you don't do that or if you have location within your location you can use suffix or prefix the location with the vendor name and you can even make a sublocation if that is the case.
for the standard cost version for vendor, you would need to create separate versions, but if it's all your location, you can select all of them even if you don't use them currently just in case if you need to use it in the future
