Anyone tried NetSuite Next? What do you think?
watching following 1

Tried it for the 3 day trial. NetSuite.ai free for anyone to try. I’m excited for it.
m
Yeah, I was planning to take the trial, but wanted to chat with people first about it. Is there something specific you liked?
r
I’m excited to have a new more modern UI, conversational Ask oracle, and AI agents.
m
Hmm, let's see how good can we utilize agents on NS. Somehow I would appreciate the modern UI more than AI, but maybe I am wrong.
r
I'm hopeful for both!

After staring at the same UI for over a decade its definitely something to get used to. I'd personally rather NS not do whatever weird caching thing they do with record access where it takes forever to spin up a transaction until the service initializes. Its like netsuite is running on a basic, on-demand heroku plan.
UI is UI but its lipstick on a pig till they fix the underlying issues that are pain points imo
m
I saw someone else talking about those caching issues a few days ago... is this a new issue or it always existed?
c
I'm not sure how far back it goes. I could have some clouded memory but pre-oracle aquisiation, you could get your own instance and/or it ran much faster. This all lives in a multi-tier architecture so you have X companies running on the same hardware. I get that performance wise, its best to release resources, but in a high performance environment, having to wait for the service to spin up is crazy bad for rest services and just general UI interaction. This is why it takes forever for transactions to load if its been a while since anyone has touched one.
You basically have to have a keep-alive signal sent constantly to keep it from shutting down
its like having a car that you have to physically kick it before it starts when you turn the key. Yeah it does run, but thats not what anyone wants. Then slapping a wrap on the car or new paint job and touting it as amazing and new.
m
You worked with NS before oracle acquisition?
c
I've been a ns dev since 2014
m
Can't clients ask for dedicated hardware?
c
You can get whatever you want if your pockets are deep enough

I've been a ns dev since 2014
Wow, lots of experince
c
Yeah I am all in on netsuite it looks like for the rest of my career
myself and a handful of other guys started this slack community probably around that time. It's been wild
m
Does it ever bother you that the ERP field in general doesn't feel like the software industry? Although it should be included in it.
I mean, the knowledge here, if we would take NS as an example, is very much fragmented. There is no popular and good knowledge base, very little open-source projects.
c
No, I prefer it. I don't like just being a cog in a wheel at a big tech company. I worked at one prior to doing netsuite and it is not fun. At least w/ netsuite you can interact with the people using whatever you are doing and get some feedback from actual people rather than whatever PM you have this month
It also pays about twice what that did
m
Hell, even the docs and suiteanswers have some wrong answers sometimes.
c
That's been true since its existed
m
Hmm, everyone has different experience.
c
Thats why most people dread netsuite support because they go off of that or they have someone with about 0 experience trying to debug stuff they have no business doing
m
Do you think you have knowledge that is not written anywhere or hard to find?
c
I definitely do not pretend to know everything. Even now I learn stuff all the time. Its a huge system and impossible to know every little thing. Experience wise its mostly having seen the same thing 100 times and know what to do to accomplish the task (or when to not write code and use native features).
m
No, this is not what I am trying to say. I really think that you have knowledge that is not written anywhere or hard to find.
c
It's possible but I wouldn't know off the top of the head anything to be honest.
m
Let me give you a very simple example... getting the locale using suitescript sometimes returns a value different from what you would get in the Advanced PDF Template... you could spend some time debugging this if you didn't know it.
You may find that info in a question here or the website that archives everything... but this kind of knowledge is not put in a structured manner anywhere.
c
I've never dealt w/ localization myself. That's something I'd have to look up. I'm just pointing out that even after 10+ years, there's always something
m
And that is a simple example as I mentioned. Not to mention something bigger like a best practice or an architecture for complex solution.
I'm just pointing out that even after 10+ years, there's always something
Is that good or bad?
c
My experience would be in the architecing/implementing solutions. It's good. There's always something you can learn so that keeps it slightly interesting. I've pretty much seen it all at this point dev wise so its nice to have something to work at.
m
We definitely have different mindsets. This situation, lack of structural knowledge, kind of makes me angry a little bit.
But I get what you are saying. But both of these can be combined. If there is always a space for exploration... fine, but after learning from it, we add it to the knowledge base... that's what I mean.
c
ah I gotcha. Yeah its not the best honestly
you (yourself) pretty much become the knowledge base at some point
🎯 1
then you can make $$$ and get out. I am very much so in the camp of doing this mainly for the money and to help people.
m
fragmented knowledge bases at each company
I am very much so in the camp of doing this mainly for the money and to help people.
Fair enough.
c
knowledge base is like that pretty much everywhere that i've experienced
documentation is ALWAYS the last thing that gets done (if there's time)
im not saying i agree with that but thats how it is
people don't pay for documentation they pay for it to work in their system and do what they want.
m
Yeah, but then new employees spend the same amount of time trying to discover how to do things and the company loses time and money because of it.
Knowledge bases are cheaper.
c
very true
In the netsuite world, its unfortunately a lot hourly based work. If i tell someone i need another 10 hours for documentation, they are going to ask a lot of questions. Netsuite has their own internal people and it should be 100000x better so we def agree on that one.

cheers to the both of you for having this conversation. its fun to read

@creece reminded me when we first started this slack group 2016/2017 it's been long journey. Our founder @kyle spearheaded this user group, then we grew it organically. Couple of years ago at suiteworld official user community manager Robert K reached out me and was interested in having some collaboration with Oracle's NS user community. It never materialized ( blessing in disguise).
