Create subcustomers with appropriate tax/non tax status - or use a service like Avalara.

For what it's worth - the subcustomers thing is a giant pain in the ass.

Understood.. I'm thinking a script would need to check customer info for zip code at checkout, then push true or false for tax, then pull tax rate... idk.  Either way, thanks again

Better off paying for a service like Avalara that handles that situation for you

We were thinking of doing this like a promotion, we pay the taxes. Will look at Avalara.

Well, you'd be better off using promo codes for something like that - but that'd be messy.

You still want to record the tax liability on the invoice - so not charging tax at all isn't a great idea.

You'd just want to give a credit for the tax amount via a promo code.

it all seems to be messy and yes was trying to avoid the cost of Avalara.  That is true about the promo code and the credit on the tax for recording... makes sense
