Just found out that customers of type Individual can't be associated with a contact... but this is from 6 years ago... is there a way to do it now?

As far as I know, no. But it looks like you CAN turn an individual customer record into a company customer record by swapping it's type at the top (haven't tried it myself, but it looks like it is allowed).

Just to document the solution here for anyone having the same problem in the future...
You need to enable this setting in General Preferences.
And the contact will have the same ID as the customer... and that's it.
