What tax calculation system do you have in your NetSuite account? Currently my company uses Avalara but we are looking to end our contract with them and select a different tax calculation system. What systems should I look at in my selection process?
a
just out of curiosity...what's wrong with avalara? just the price?
d
@AK47 I don't think it's the price as much as it is that we have received very poor customer service from them, despite having upgraded to enterprise level support, and that Avalara lacks certain features that would be useful for non profits (we are a non profit organization and we work with a lot of other non profit organizations).
a
I don't know of any tax/Netsuite integration that has more features than Avalara, but check out Vertex or TaxJar I guess.
d
@AK47 We also need the tax system to integrate with our ecommerce platform (Salesforce Commerce Cloud). So it needs to be able to integrate with more than just our NetSuite ERP.
a
I believe they both do connect to salesforce...but again, if I probably would've recommended Avalara lol Good luck...
d
Do you use Avalara and do you like it?
a
I have some clients that do, and I never had any real issues. Seems to work well and has a huge following.
had limited experience with their support...they weren't so helpful, but they managed to give me enough so i can figure stuff out on my own

Look into Reuters Onesource - @C_Billings can be a good source of information, he is the Tax guru here
p
There are a number of alternatives, suitetax, legacy tax, taxjar, vertex, TR Onesource, some localization alternatives with very limited coverage (specific country or use case.) There is no way of recommending anything unless you state what functionality you need - Avalara is way more than just tax determination, they can file your taxes, manage your thresholds, keep track of changes/compliance for you, can handle exemptions in same process etc. etc. - no one else gets close to that for US. I have seen good attempts at world-wide coverage with TR Onesource but the cost was astronomical. If you have no need for anything additional, maybe look into the Netsuite alternatives. Support from Avalara is ofc directly linked to how much you spend which I think is perfectly fine - I will say even the base support has been quick to respond but depending how many people you have involved and their skill level an additional support package would likely go a long way.
c
Support from Avalara related to the integration with NS has been crap since 2015. I commented on your other thread and told you what to consider. All of the major players calculate, file track exemptions. The major hurdle for all of them is typical. They are distinct products from each other. For instance filing and compliance typically extracts extra data from your ERP that wasnt sent with the tax calculation and creates a mapping headache.
p
I'm surprised you want to turn this into a netsuite integration discussion, ofc the major players have that covered, avalara is still by far the most used which should tell you something. No blanket statements on anything will hlpe pick the right provider, you need to be very specific and evaluate from there - support is just as much for the business as for the integration and in my experience they perform quite well in that aspect.
c
I don't know who you are...the point here is Avalara as a product is just fine and mostly for US and CA. Worldwide is a different matter. Still some things to work out. If you have their Legacy Tax Integration you will find numerous comments here in Slack about user experiences with questions. Like a lot of partners they farm out the integration work to third parties so they cant answer some of the questions thrown at them.
p
Avalara has VAT support since at least a year back (by that I mean reasonable coverage, they initiated VAT support many years ago but it was always an afterthought till then.) TR OneSource is flexible enough that you may be able to get some sort of worldwide coverage but it would never be optimal, no one can do that, you need localizations for a large number of countries. Again, why you want to pick a partner based on how they handle the odd integration question is terrible advice - start with actual functionality and compliance.
c
Still don't know who you are....your feedback was unsolicited and unneeded. TR OneSource comments are nonsense. Its been working worldwide for some time for at least one of the largest NS customers out there.
p
Yes, then its for everyone obviously, you really went from the specific legacy integration support to worldwide coverage - I was only pointing out the evaluation of alternatives is a big deal and several people asked about why he wanted to find an alternative. I stated previosuly the cost was astronomical for something like 'global' with TR onesource - you cannot detach tax determination from reporting and further 3rd party needs like ecom, apps etc. Not sure why you keep asking who I am, why is that relevant?

Go back to farming for leads.
