does NS have a native way of storing GTIN-14 numbers for items? storing the Indicator + the qty of base units that indicator represents? or do I just have to resort to custom fields for that

Native NS can't do it - WMS add on's can (like RF-SMART - full disclosure, i work for RF-SMART).
