does anybody know how I can have a sales discount applied to the item itself as opposed to being added as a line item on the order? this makes determining our gross margin very challenging because we have hundreds of thousands of dollars in a bucket (sales discounts) that aren't being directly attributed to a particular class and product. This can't be done at the header level for the entire transaction because we may have only certain items that qualify for discount (for instance, 20% off shirts and the order includes two shirts and two pairs of pants).

try a Non-Posting Discount Items

oh, does the system sometimes calculate the taxes on the retail amount and not the retail-discount amount? i tried in SB and I don't have taxes in SB

not really, its more that discounts can affect taxes and usually you want to setup the tax on the discount item correctly
