Would it be effective to use item groups or kits for a 'bundle' of items that are sold at a discount?

Depends on required GL impact and desired display/view for customer: if I need it to all be under the items themselves for profit/loss purposes - I'd be tempted to use an item group that had all the items + a subtotal item followed by a discount item. Alternatively a kit item can do this without a subtotal and a discount item.

i'd say we don't have a preference on the display/view but we'd definitely want to have a GL impact and be able to drop ship which I remember one of them doesn't allow that

Isn't that just controlled by the "print member items" option on the item?

Well, let's assume you sell items both through their own part # and through kits. I want to include both. So, if I sell 5 items A under their own part # and 5 kits (B), that is also using 5 A, I want to show 10 in my sales searches.
No, it's not simply controlled by the "print member items" as this feature only show the components on SO, but the metadata isn't connected still

Which is why my first suggestion was "it if needs to be under the items themselves for profit/loss purposes - I'd be tempted to use an item group"

I agree, but my client built its environment using Kit so I got to find a solution. Thanks!

hmm.. the accounting manager keeps the base price set to 0 for the components
is there no way to set a item group price not determined by the components?
