Can you pull custom fields into reports or do you have to use searches for that?

Yes you can pull custom fields into reports but reports are a lot more restrictive. Using Searches are better and give you more access to custom fields

also - your fields have to have value stored in order to bring them into reports (so no automatic joins using fields with store value turned off)
