why cant certain custom fields be used on workflows?

display in website (item rec) store display name (item rec) and two other custom fields i have created on item records

Hm, you should be able to use custom fields in workflows. What kind of record is the workflow running on? Transactions?
Because it sounds like you probably need to do a join field on the Item record to pull those into the workflow.

its running on inventory item record.

And these custom fields, they are "Applied To" the Inventory Items - correct? As in:
message has been deleted
And another question - what action are you executing in the workflow?

yes cause they show up on an item record. My workflow is trying to create a non inventory item when an inventory item gets created so it is a "CreateRecord" action
just realized that they are all SCA fields.
