Hi all. We're a printing company- and looking to get netsuite setup to track our usage of inventory (think paper, ink etc). I have no problem getting the inventory items setup etc. But I don't want to do any clever stuff (build orders stuff like that). All I want to do, is if I create an invoice for (e.g.) 100 30x40cm prints to decrease my stock of paper by 12sqm. All of the guides etc I look at talk about using build orders etc which is overcomplicated for what we're trying to achieve. Can anyone suggest a way forward?

I suppose you could consider using a kit/package item for the print SKU and a component of that kit could be the paper SKU used to make the print, with a base UOM of sqm.

yep- that's what I thought might work. As I understand it- using kits means there's no build orders etc (as opposed to using assembly items)

Kits or Item Groups are the right choice for what you're suggesting, the difference between the two is on the pricing side.

Each job would use different amount of ink? If so work orders would be a good way to keep track of uses of your inventory.

Believe OP was not wanting to get so granular as to account for ink consumption

I am not even sure you need to use Kit items. I am thinking you can just create the Paper as inventory Items. on the customer Sales order (or invoice) include a line for the number of pages printed once you fulfill the order that should reduce the inventory. Perhaps?
