Is there a trick to allowing custom filtering of a period for JE saved search? When I add it to filters I just get the period, quarter, year filters but I can't enter or search "Dec 2018"

Can't be done. Kind of a pain in the butt

You could create another custom field that sources the period field and does not store value and see if that works
