I worked for a financial services and payroll company years ago. The developers and software had access to a database, but it was really just a bunch of views on top of a hidden database, which none of us had access to. One billing person who was being let go tried to delete 20% of our invoices for the month on her last morning. Thankfully, the "real" database still had all of the data so it was recoverable.
