They're certainly more limited than scripts. I use them when I can to avoid scripting because I'm not a developer 😋. However I think there are a lot of benefits to using workflow...for non-developers like myself they are easier to learn, and are easier for end users/clients to edit them if they need to. Also, I could be wrong about this one, but I think you have a lot less of a chance of NetSuite deprecating code and breaking something if you are using NetSuite's provided tools to build it.
