We have products that require subcontractor processing. Analogous example is a stainless steel weighing 10 pounds (currently our UOM) and 120 inches long. We will cut it internally before we send it to the subcontractor. Let's say we cut 40 inches weighing 10 pounds. We will then send it to the subcontractor for processing. Yes, this is a perfect use case of outsourced manufacturing but how do we track that we now have 2 pieces of steel: one weighing 7 lbs and 80 inches long and another weighing 10 lbs and 40 inches long? If we use lot number, I can't imagine how we are going to update the original length where the new piece of steel came from. We need to be able to track the original and current lengths per piece of steel.
