anyone know if we can view the average cost of an item at a certain date

I don't get an AVG cost value when I try that @AK47 tell me your secrets! I was thinking if Jordan is using average cost as his costing method he could pull the COGS of transactions in the desired date.

the inventory valuation report will give you the total quantity and total value of any item as of some date. Total Value/Total Pieces would give you the average cost.
