My user wants the ability to e-mail a picking list to her 3PL provider without exposing the sales order record to them, but I'm not sure how to retrieve the entity ID of the picking list from a Sales Order record in order to load the file in my script

Have you tried the Dummy Picking List (Advanced PDF) at Sales order level ?
