Is there are standard way to consume inventory for business use? Like a transaction type we should be using other than just an inventory adjustment? This would be for inventory items that we don't directly include on SOs and WOs, like packaging, tape, cleaning, etc. The goal would be to have the usage entered periodically so we can forecast it for restocking. Thanks!

You could always have them with a zero dollar sale price. Then create an internal customer and create cash sales to consume them.

Correct expense hit, and gives you forecasting ability based on consumption

Thanks @KevinJ of Kansas, I'll see if that will work for us.

My question may depend on your business type:
For packaging: Why not add the standard amount to your BOMs and backflush that on Work Orders? This will provide the ability to forecast and roll it into your COGs. any amount over or under the non-standard amount would flush out in an inventory count.

Thanks for following up. It's not tied to a specific product, it would be more like; shipping container boxes that may contain multiple items, routine cleaning materials used in production, etc. What we've decided to do is have the warehouse transfer the items with a flag so we know they are being "consumed". Then we have to adjust out periodically.
