anybody know what triggers the system to change the GL impact like this?

Does this transaction hit an inventory account?

I believe this could be due to costing method (other than average) because NS uses average upon transaction save then fixes it later on. Could also be due to backdated inventory-affecting transaction, NS will try to update the costing of the subsequent transactions

It's likely what @Luis said. Do you have additional lines on your GL impact that say "Cost of Sales Adjustment?" Those will usually appear when inventory recalcs like Luis is talking about.

Additional note: don't ever backdate inventory transactions if you can help it. It can wreak havoc. Would be good to understand the "order of operations" of how NS calculates costing too.
Depending on transaction type, an entry recorded at 8 am may be treated as after a transaction recorded at 5 pm.
Can't remember what the doc is called, but it's out in SuiteAnswers.

Outside chance but you may have a Custom GL Plugin Implementation. Customization > Plugins > Plugin Implementations. Look at plugins under the Type dropdown.
