My wife grew up in a very rural hamlet. Most of the other families in the area would drive into the village where there were lots of houses to trick or treat. Her father thought it was hilarious to drive down remote, rural country roads with no lights or sidewalks and have his kids trick or treat at those houses, surprising unsuspecting people. They usually had no candy and were not prepared at all. Some of them even came to the door in their nightgowns/pajamas/barely dressed. They scrambled to find food in their pantry or just pull money from their wallet. She still cringes thinking about it.
