I would say update your items in off business hours or weekend & put a notice and take it down for maintenance while you update, so it doesn't look out of sync, it does need indexing when you change the item record. having said that If you sell worldwide, there is no off hours, so you might need to put a maintenance notice, it is significantly slow during the peak hours.
