I made a new record type and a field on it that links to inventory items. but i can't see any to find that record type on an inventory saved search to get other values from the record type onto the saved search. is that possible?

If the inventory item field on your custom record is mark as “Record is Parent” I think you can do a join from an Item search to your custom record
