sounds like RPRO might have been using EAN-13 which has 13 digits, not UPC (-A, which is 12)... Codes like these, in general, have a very specific format and generally contain a 'check digit' that is actually a calculated value based on other numbers in the code. It's intended to prevent 'corruption' of both the numbers and the representative symbols as printed.
