I'm a bit confused by the question - but yes?
You have Transaction Forms - and you can have Transaction PDF / Advanced PDFs
There's a relationship between the transaction form and the printing layout.
If you have multiple Transaction Forms - then it will utilize the form that's in the drop down.
You can also make a SO -> Invoice form link on the linked forms tab

understood, but I don't see how or where the sales order transaction form ends up selecting the invoice transaction form and hence the invoice advanced pdf

mostly we don't currently set the Invoice form on a SO, and it just uses the preferred form. but for some customers we want to be able to select a different form. this looks like the method to do it

You might be able to use workflow or script to force the form too if it's just the 1 customer
though - beware of using workflows and forms. Funny shit happens with it.

in this instance it is for our web retail customers. we use a csv import to import the orders. I think it's easiest just to make a custom SO form for those orders
