There are two steps in the Advanced PDF/HTML Templates - Freemarker and then BFO. Freemarker does the templating and then BFO renders that to a PDF document. If you "render" to html then just Freemarker runs and it just find replaces &lt;pdf&gt; with &lt;html&gt;
