I think I gave an incomplete example for split initially. You need to pass in the separator (delimiter) string for split to do anything useful. Using split without the parameter actually does split the entire string into an array of characters, per the documentation: https://freemarker.apache.org/docs/ref_builtins_string.html#ref_builtin_split
