From my recollection, the last time I tested it, you can only import searches that are public, but deploying the search back to your account unchecks the public box, making it private, so it's slightly destructive to saved searches at this time. I have been splitting my SDF deployments into two parts: manual or scripted deployment of saved searches, and then deploy everything else through SDF.
