Anyone have experience with editing the wave criteria template, and how I can add something as simple as some values for # of orders to include in a wave. Like we want to wave 40 orders per user, and the shipping manager is just clicking 40 times to select 40 orders to wave out of 200 etc.

Because wave templates are effectively saved searches (with additional limitations) you are limited by what you can accomplish in a saved search. You can set "Run Restricted" and "Max Results" to limit the returned volume for every user, but it is not a variable that you can change on the fly on the "Wave Criteria" page itself. The user would need to edit the template each time if they need to change volume displayed. You also need to consider the security risk of "Run Unrestricted".
