We can print bar code labels for the item name and serial number but is bar code scanning integration a native feature in the system or does that have to be customized? or will it depend on the barcode scanner?

Barcodes are just fonts. :)

Barcode scanners are just keyboards. There is limited native support for barcode functionality in some screens such as item fulfilment IIRC but for comprehensive support you will need a WMS
