Are you doing this manually or via script/workflow? You should be able to modify values on the component items of a group successfully without an issue. I've definitely done it successfully manually. If you're doing a script or workflow, you have to make it ignore that "End of Group" line item that appears when you add a group item. You can't do any modifications to the End of Group "items."
