I haven't tried myself but from the notes in the schema browser "A read-only field that returns the total amount of the transaction. check this -- in the UI, this can be entered but then is overwritten on submit" So it sounds like it may not error if you set a value but will revert to the calculated value anyway and not let you know. So maybe it's not read-only in the strict sense.
