Use a workflow to update the transaction in the header - with a checkbox. (using sublist action groups) and then use that checkbox as your filter.

Thanks Kevin. I was thinking about exposing various bits of data in custom fields and trying to manipulate that, but the checkbox option is far better. Checkbox and a mass update, then filtering using the result is definitely a workable option.
