Conclusion: a practitioner consensus hiding in plain sight
The aggregate signal from 22 technically credentialed skeptics is not "AI coding doesn't work". Most of them use it daily. It is narrower and harder to refute: AI coding assistants are good amplifiers and poor autonomous engineers; their productivity claims are systematically inflated; their output degrades code quality absent senior review; they cannot do formal specification, real planning, or off-distribution engineering; they are introducing a new security regime (prompt injection, the lethal trifecta) that is architecturally unsolved; and they are inducing measurable skill atrophy in junior developers while organizations quietly keep hiring them. Karpathy's "decade of agents," Orosz's "typing was never the bottleneck," Fowler's "of course it's a bubble," Stenberg's "death by a thousand slops," LeCun's "complete bullshit," and the METR 19% slowdown are now the load-bearing citations of this counter-narrative. The most useful framing the period produced is Kent Beck's and Simon Willison's pair: "augmented coding" and "vibe engineering" on one side, "vibe coding" and "slop" on the other. What separates them is not the tool but the engineer's discipline, which is exactly the conclusion every critic on this list, whether from the Linux kernel, a C++ committee, a game studio, or a foundation model lab, converges on.
