I am NetSuite Developer and Administrator with 3 years of NS experience. I am Canadian Citizen and planning to move to USA for NetSuite Job opportunities on TN Visa. Need your expert advice if this is a good move or not. Currently i am making 100000 CAD per year in Toronto. Should i look for Contract or Full time. I have family in Toronto so will be traveling between USA and Canada. Which cities has maximum job opportunity and what salary should i look for.
o
@Netsuite solutions Well as someone that did that exact same path I guess I can tell you a lot about it 🙂
So first of all, yo understand a TN visa is a) for engineers only, so I assume you a Software Engineer degree and, very very importantly B) your TN visa is tied to ONE specific employer
So you have to have a US employer ready to sponsor you. You cannot go to the US on a TN visa THEN look for an employer
and then you CANNOT work for anyone other than that employer
so you can't freelance and work for multiple companies
So you will need to line up an employer willing to sponsor your TN. Your TN visa is then renewable every 3 or 5 years (I forget, sorry) so you have to have a game plan if you intend to make this a permanent move, otherwise you face deportation every few years.
So all the immigration stuff aside: salaries in the US are higher than in Canada, and you pay fewer taxes. Of course, there is less safety net - healthcare, obviously, is something you'll need to manage yourself. So a portion of that extra salary needs to be held wisely for such things
As for what city, that is nothing something really answerable. Depends on a multitude of factors, but mostly A) where your employer will be or wants you to be and B) personal preference. East Coast or West Coast? North or South? Big city or not?

@Olivier Gagnon (DXC) Thank you for your reply. I understand that i have to move every 3 years as TN is renewed for 3 years. Currently NetSuite market is hot and i can easily get sponsorship with a good employer. Even though i want to make permanent move but TN visa is not duel intent visa (work and immigration) so cannot apply for immigration. I prefer cities like Boston, Chicago which is accessible from Toronto with small flight duration. Toronto NS market does not pay much and not many long term contracts. I think maximum salary i can get in Toronto on full time job is 13,0000 CAD per year

Cost of living is Toronto is high, but Boston and Chicago arenT' cheap either. As an Admin, US salaries start capping out at 80k-90k USD. As a developer you can get into 100-130k USD at the top end
So basically in terms of numbers you aren't looking at anything significantly different than Toronto - but with US lower US taxes (if you break all ties with Canada) and in USD, which obviously is good if you plan on returning to Canada
The best way to keep more money of course is to stay away from large cities, to get a lower cost of living. Of course, that affects your living condition too. If you are young and outgoing, a boring suburb is probably not appealing to you

@Olivier Gagnon (DXC) Thank you for your reply. I am thinking before i decide whether it is a good decision to move to USA or not on long term basis, i should try 6 months contract in USA. This will provide me an idea what should i do next.
o
Well keep in mind your cost of relocation
6 months may not be profitable

If i am getting 80-90 dollars per hour and on contract then i can write off these expenses and even paying Canadian tax, i can still save good amount of money

Move to Texas, no income tax, low property tax. Austin has so many opportunities
Initially people were being paid less because of the cost of living , now a days every company is either moving to or has already moved its office in Austin. As companies are getting the people relocated or hiring new people, they are giving good salaries too. So its good to consider
