We are trying to understand costs by account. So for a given account and a given period, we want to see all transactions --- Is there a standard report or a search that anyone can point me to for this request

Try navigating to Reports --> Financial --> General Ledger. It will give you the transactions listed for an account per period. Check your requirements if you want non posted entries on the account as well
