Random question - what's the earliest anyone has seen an NS contract being renewed?
j
I mean theoretically you could do it any time. But usually I see it renewed for more years versus way ahead of time. In actual answer to your question, personally, like 8-10 months ahead was the earliest I ever saw.
a
We are 16 months out and they want to tack on Premium Tier service cost to our existing contract, we're trying to argue we should just renew it now since they're technically changing it. They're saying it's unheard of. We just don't want to have this conversation again in 16 months, it's painful.
j
yeah, they're stinging everyone with the Tier pricing nonsense. Best you can do is just keep bugging the hell out of your rep or get them to commit to something in writing now.
a
easier said than done! ha. thanks!
j
I had one rep who was on their way out say now that Oracle is in charge, expect annual increases of 7-15% pretty consistently
a
It's been a dumpster fire since Oracle took charge. We did hear we'll get a 15% price increase at renewal.
j
the best trick I saw was one company who was like "we're thinking of adding these 4 different modules, can you quote us and tell us what that would look like all in". Then they got a new account rep a bit later (cuz those positions are revolving doors) and pulled out the pieces they already had and were like "we already got quoted this price for those" (and never went with the additional modules). 😆
a
good one! it's sad people have to resort to trickery. we just got a new rep and it's a whole different ball game, discounts we once got as a rule are now non existent because 'it's not allowed'. BS!
k
Normally the renewals seem to be last minute any time I've ever been involved in the conversations - how much of that was NS vs the client though, I'm not sure.
The really fun ones are when someone has decided they want off NS for some reason, and renewal comes up before they are ready to actually get off it.
For what it's worth - you see similar approaches with any of the cloud only ERPs - if you don't have the data local, it's pretty typical that you're a bit at their whim with regards to pricing.
And the selling folks are much more inclined to give discounts than the folks managing renewals.
a
yep, it's like buying a used car. we're very aware when they say you do renewal 2 to 3 months before the contract is up, it's because it leaves you no time to switch. that's why we're negotiating now. we'll see how it goes!
k
"I might go somewhere else" can probably be a powerful tool when used with some actual force behind it.
a
I’m hoping. I don’t want to be part of a switch.
k
It'd have to be a substantially cheaper per year solution to make it worth it though.
i.e. implementation costs, licensing overlap are likely to wipe out any cost savings - it'd need to be solving more issues than just price for me to justify it.
d
Whats the reason for the premium tier, user count? transaction count?
a
@dynamicl it's transactions lines. so each line an on invoice counts as one line.
@KevinJ of Kansas the premium tier says it includes a sandbox, yet in the renewal contract they sent us it's still listed as a hefty cost. my rep said it's just part of a package deal the discount is based on. does that seem right?
k
Sandbox is always a markup on all your licensing, similar to premium support. So it will show up as an additional line. Primary thing to consider is the overral total
And I'm no licensing expert. Only touched a dozen or so accounts that way
And it's been a bit since I last saw a quote
a
That actually does make a bit of sense. I wish Oracle could just explain it as easily instead of smoke and mirrors. They are at least letting us renew 16 months in advance. Like they’re doing us a favor.
