You should push hard for Avalara to hold your hand on this one. They should have a solution...

Agreed. Raise the red flag.
@lia.gelder
This is not an uncommon requirement.

oh we’ve tried. We’ve had some calls with them where they’ve reviewed our setup and they say it matches what their other customer did, but it still isn’t working so now they’re saying it’s on NetSuite to fix. I opened a NS case about it but so far we haven’t figured anything out.
Avalara seems to think it isn’t common and have only mentioned one other customer who needed it so they’re not super familiar with troubleshooting it.

Lia, we set the tax code based upon the shipping country on the sales order. How do you create your sales orders? I currently set the tax code through an integration but you could probably create a script that sets the tax code for you
l
We tried this but Netsuite kept setting it back to Not Taxable :/
Whenever the order went through a scheduled script
p
are there any defaults on item record? I would track what keeps on setting it back
l
No, every default is set to AVATAX or AVATAX-CAN accordingly and there’s no customization setting it back, just NS.
Currently we can get it to set AVATAX-CAN on Canada orders just fine, but US ones always go to Not Taxable, unless we disable per-line taxes
so that’s the tactic we’re investigating next
p
I just looked at our avalara settings and we do not calculate in a per-line basis
l
roger. We may have just found a solution. I’ll record it here once it’s finalized
