And I wouldn't consider exporting everything you have via SDF a backup

You can export to CSV for data too if you have to have it somewhere.

There are limits to what can csv imported back in

Not sure if this helps but you on Premium or higher plans you will soon be able to refresh sandboxes from another sandbox
