Can you not use standard classifications on customer records? Not seeing the option to open those up for customer records. Would we need to create a custom segment? Customers are filtered under two "units" and we need a way to segment that out for reporting and such.

available on customers for segmentation. What are you looking to report on?

Commissions calculation and revenue tracking, mostly. Depending on the unit, it is calculated in a different way.
