there is no way to auto-populate item group components on sales order lines with custom field (column) values entered on the main item group level, is there?

I did this with a nasty recursive user event script at a client one time. Probably could have been designed better.

I'm seriously thinking of recommending we abandon Item Groups for this project - when we decided to go with them it was before we realized how frequently SO lines would need to be adjusted / added, and they track a lot of important info at the SO line level

Was working with a client that had some crazy revenue maximization consultant give them these hairballed ideas - and it was like "you ever work with an ERP before?"

We kept waffling back and forth between kits and item groups and just plain old items.

as a result of the combination of requirements

Probably needed a custom sales order configurator to meet all the needs.

Might be something you examine as well instead of trying to use item groups.
